Description
Four concrete pillars along the frontage of 2-4 Parchmore Road, Thornton Heath, have been clad with decorative stainless steel artwork.

The exterior metal has a smooth, highly reflective electropolished finish.  The backing metal has a contrasting shot blasted finish leaving a matt, sandy texture.

Designs on the surface show different strands growing together to form a tied knot, each pillar design depicting a separate stage of this process.

The metal has cut text in various languages that relate to the concept of moving towards resolution, or a sense of bringing together.  Details of this text can be found by clicking the 'Design' button opposite.

Collectively, the pillar designs are entitled ‘Becoming’.

The dimensions for each pillar are approx.:

      Diameter: 50 cm
      Height:    300 cm (inc. collars)
Mass:      80 kg (exc. concrete fill)

Fabrication
The material throughout (including all fixings) is stainless steel.  The shot-blasted backing layer is grade 316 stainless, all other parts are grade 304.  The thickness of the sheet metal for each layer is 2mm.  The Artist performed all fabrication at his studio.

Each artwork is bolted to its pillar with three circumferential metal straps.  The corner pillar comprises of five sections that screw together, with seams following the contours of the design.  The remaining pillars are each comprised of two sections that screw together, with seams running vertically.
